Founded in 1934 by Dr Kurt Hahn, Gordonstoun, a fully co-educational boarding school, provides a broad educational programme for students aged 8 to 18 years. Set on a large, magnificent estate in Moray, it is within three hours’ travel from central London and close to international airports. The curriculum and distinctive ethos is driven by the school motto, ‘Plus est en vous’ – ‘There is more in you’.
Mission and unique curriculum
Gordonstoun’s philosophy is based on the holistic development of its students, treating each as an individual, and encouraging learning through experience to maximise achievement and fulfillment. This is achieved through the School’s unique programme, which is based on four pillars: challenge – students are stretched mentally and physically as part of the development of interpersonal skills; responsibility – all students are encouraged to manage their own lives and take a substantial share in the supervision, guidance and development of younger students; service – all students are encouraged to contribute to society through the concept and practice of service; and internationalism – students learn to be international in both outlook and approach to life through a multicultural environment, a wide programme of exchanges and international service projects, and the School’s membership of the Round Square movement.
Academic programme
Students entering the Senior School in year 9 (13+) pursue a year’s foundation course. Thereafter, a programme is devised that combines core subjects with a wide range of options for GCSE. A substantial number of students join in the sixth form from other schools. Most students will study three A-levels and one AS-level selected from a choice of over 20 subjects. There is a comprehensive system of self-assessment throughout.
The arts and sports
Over half the students learn to play musical instruments in a busy, vibrant department that enjoys an excellent widespread reputation. Drama and dance performances emphasise participation, teamwork, personal development and quality. The School is represented regularly at important competitions and festivals.
The physical education programme stretches and satisfies both the top athlete and the willing enthusiast, with the main team games and a multitude of other options available.
All students undertake courses in seamanship in preparation for voyages on the School’s 80-foot sail-training vessel. Facilities include a brand new 220-seater studio theatre and plans for a new music recital room.
A Gordonstoun education prepares students for a
full and active role as international citizens in a
changing world.
