Fyling Hall is a small and friendly co-educational boarding school. Overlooking the picturesque fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, the School is spectacularly situated in 45 acres of wooded hillside within the North York Moors National Park. The beautiful coastal and moorland countryside is a wonderful learning resource and affords pupils a rare degree of freedom. In fact for Fyling pupils, many of whom return in due course to send their own children, schooldays are indeed happy days. This happiness is all-important as we believe learning can only thrive if children feel secure and content.
Academic
Academic standards and expectations are high, as is evident from the impressive examination results. The teaching is unashamedly traditional, seeking always to support and encourage. Any progress is noted and the termly effort grades of all pupils are fully monitored. Most sixth-formers are accepted by their first-choice university, but old pupils can be found in occupations ranging from TV racing commentator to zoo-keeper. Our fees are among the most affordable in the country and we are consistently ranked in the top ten best-value independent boarding schools by The Financial Times.
Extracurricular
We have a lively tradition of music and drama. Our theatre, T he Barn, is used for plays, pantomimes, musical recitals and ad hoc student productions including the annual talent competitions. School parties regularly attend productions at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.
The School enjoys a proud reputation for sport – rugby, hockey, soccer, basketball, netball, tennis and cross-country all feature on the timetable. The School boasts numerous representatives in County and District teams, and three England rugby players. Some pupils shine in these sports, but more important is the willingness to take part and learn to play in a team.
Pupils can safely enjoy the wonderful learning resources offered by moors and sea – mountain biking, camping, riding the much-loved school ponies. More formally, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Army Cadets, Scouts and Air Training Corps are well supported. Within the secure family atmosphere of this closely knit community, young people develop the confidence and balanced outlook to tackle the adult world.
The days that make us happy make us wise.
