History and philosophy
Frensham Heights, a co-educational, non-denominational school for 490 pupils (aged 3–18), is centered round a magnificent Edwardian country house, commanding glorious views across open country. It is an hour from London and 40 minutes from Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
The Daily Telegraph described Frensham as ‘special’ – it is. Ever since the School’s foundation its message has been the importance of freedom from prejudice, an open mind and receptivity to new ideas. The method by which this philosophy is delivered may have changed, but not the content.
Curriculum
The School offers a balanced curriculum with a choice of 19 GCSE, 23 AS and 19 A-level subjects. With average class sizes of 18, the academic results are excellent. Art, drama, dance and music are held in high regard, and the School’s choirs and orchestras perform here and overseas. Sport is integral to School life, within the curriculum, in the evenings and at weekends.
The School sees activities outside the classroom as central to its educational ideal and it offers an impressive list. In particular, the School is the only one in the country to be licensed as an outdoor activity centre, and the programme based around this supports the School’s belief that personal challenge is integral to the educational process.
Facilities
Recent building projects include an award-winning performing arts centre, a new music school and classroom blocks. A new sixth-form house opens in September 2006. These stand alongside a newly renovated library, ICT centre, science labs, sports hall and an art and design centre. These facilities, together with the tennis courts, swimming pool, outdoor education centre and extensive playing fields, form an impressive campus.
Boarding and overseas students
There is the choice of full or weekly boarding in small friendly Houses. The School has devised an imaginative weekend programme in which many day pupils join. Overseas students are welcome and make up 10% of the School’s population. Reasonable proficiency at English is essential, though tuition in English as a second language is provided.
No Uniforms. No Bullying. No Competition. Creative
Learning. Creative Thinking.
