Centre of excellence
Framlingham College is a well-established centre of academic, cultural and sporting excellence, providing fully co-educational boarding and day schooling from 3 to 18 in a caring and purposeful environment. It enjoys a magnificent situation, looking out across the mere to the 12th-Century castle, and is within easy striking distance of Ipswich, Cambridge, Colchester and Stansted. A courier service is provided to and from Heathrow Airport. The College grounds are extensive and its original mock- Gothic buildings have been significantly developed over the years, most spectacularly as a result of a recent £5m building initiative. Its facilities are now quite exceptional! A complete refurbishment of the theatre and concert hall will be completed in 2006.
Brandeston Hall
Our Prep School is located just a few miles away at the equally idyllic neo-Tudor setting of Brandeston Hall. It offers first-class day schooling for pupils from 3 years of age, and day and boarding for those between 7 and 13. Recent developments to the historic main school buildings have seen the opening of a magnificent multi-purpose hall, a state-of-the-art design and technology centre, and a delightful new library.
Brandeston Hall enjoys an excellent reputation in its own right, while naturally benefiting from the closest of links with its senior counterpart. All its pupils are prepared for CE or scholarship examination at 13+, making the transition to the College a smooth, seamless and natural process.
The students
Our commitment to co-education allows for the development of a natural family atmosphere in which young men and women can share friendships and celebrate one another’s individual and collective achievements. We encourage the virtues of courtesy, care and trust, and take pleasure in the good humour, vitality and refreshingly unpretentious manner of our student community.
The curriculum
The College curriculum offers both breadth and choice. Individual programmes of study provide each pupil with the requisite knowledge and expertise to realise his or her full potential in public examinations, and thereafter to meet the challenges of tertiary education and the 21st- Century workplace. The majority of our leavers go on to top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, and the remarkable diversity of courses chosen reflects the range of academic opportunities provided by the College.
Academic excellence
Regular grades and reports keep parents updated on effort and attainment levels while enabling academic tutors to celebrate successes, respond quickly to individual problems, and to encourage the pursuit of academic excellence. We pride ourselves on delivering ‘value-added education’ and results at GCSE, AS and A-level have been consistently in excess of those projected on the strength of baseline tests taken in Years 9, 10 and 12. Unlike some schools, whose league table position is a result of a highly selective admissions policy, we are a ‘broad church’ and are pleased to accept talented pupils who are not automatically destined to achieve A grades, as well as academic high-fliers.
Framlingham College has a long-standing commitment to multicultural education and enjoys the diverse talents of carefully selected students from all over Europe and beyond. Expert guidance and support is also provided for those with special needs.
Modern living
All students are accommodated in seven fully integrated boarding and day houses: three for girls and four for boys. Facilities are modern, light and spacious, offering attractive and comfortable environments for both study and relaxation. A full and varied programme of activity is provided each Sunday both on and off campus, ensuring that the weekend provides plenty of choice and opportunity for the boarding community.
A real strength of the integrated boarding and day system is that it provides boarders with extra space and privacy during the evenings when they most need it, while enabling everyone to take full advantage of the rich seam of extracurricular activities that are on offer. Day pupils can slip into tea or prep before an evening performance or rehearsal, or flexi-board in comfortable and familiar surroundings, as and when required.
Art and design
The College’s design school is widely recognised as a centre of excellence and the quality of our students’ work is frequently reflected in their successes in regional and national competition. Endless opportunities exist for the design and manufacture of furniture and jewellery; for engineering, photography, fine art and sculpture; for studying the history of art and for developing ICT skills. Our students are encouraged to work independently, within a supportive working environment, pursuing their own particular interests to produce works of the highest calibre.
Music and drama
A rich diversity of musical opportunities is available to all, from formal ensembles, through various chamber groups, to the lighter musical notes of fast-developing jazz and rock scenes. All manner of concerts are a feature of College life, while cabaret evenings and musicals regularly bring music and drama departments together in the performance of powerful musical theatre. Fine venues for this eclectic mix of musical performance include Framlingham Castle and Snape Maltings. There are three major drama productions a year, providing opportunities for all students to participate to the highest possible standards, both as performers and technicians.
Extracurricular activities
Extracurricular activities range from the popular and extremely successful Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme to the outward-bound work of the voluntary Combined Cadet Force, from the cut and thrust of the debating society to the energetic worlds of the new fitness suite and indoor swimming pool. As well as visiting speakers and musical performances, there are many cultural, educational and recreational visits. Whether it is cookery or choral society, equestrianism or aero-modelling, a round of golf on campus or trekking in Peru, there is something exciting for everyone.
Sport for all
Sport is an important part of College life and we are good at it. Rarely a year goes by without some of our teams reaching the finals of national competitions, while a significant proportion of our students compete regularly at county, divisional or national level. The College has a magnificent indoor swimming pool, sports and fitness complex to complement its extensive and immaculately kept playing fields. It boasts one of the finest cricket squares in East Anglia, a splendid floodlit Astroturf for both hockey and tennis, a nine-hole golf course and a multitude of other sporting opportunities ranging from athletics and shooting to rugby, badminton, basketball and netball.
Encouraging the pursuit of excellence.
