Preparatory Senior
Since 1998, Ellesmere has been one of the fastest growing independent schools in the country, with pupil numbers rising by more than 30%. This growth has led to the building of a dedicated Lower School for boys and girls aged 8 to 13, and the recent development of a sports centre.
In the Senior School, two-thirds of our pupils are boarders. Full and weekly boarding is available from the age of ten. There is a popular Sixth Form, with an exceptionally wide range of A-levels on offer. GCSE media studies is being offered from September 2005.
Location and facilities
The College is set in extensive grounds in the beautiful north Shropshire ‘lake district’. Facilities are excellent and include a nine-hole golf course, a purpose-built theatre, six all-weather tennis courts, as well as indoor and outdoor shooting ranges.
Day and boarding
Well-established tutoring and pastoral care systems exist to ensure that each pupil has the individual attention to be supported with their studies and develop talent. A competitive house system exists to ensure each pupil feels part of a wider group beyond their immediate peer group. Although traditionally Ellesmere College has offered full boarding and day pupil attendance, a flexible weekly boarding option is now also available. The majority of day pupils at Ellesmere use the school bus service, which covers a wide area.
Academic standards
Academic results are high, with many scholarships available for a wide range of talents. The emphasis of an Ellesmerian education is, however, firmly on breadth, with each pupil achieving his or her full potential, whatever that may be.
The College has a national reputation for the quality of its learning support. Music is an integral part of life at Ellesmere. All pupils are encouraged to pursue the playing of an instrument. Drama is also much enjoyed by our pupils at all levels, with a diverse range of plays being performed in the Arts Centre during the academic year. Recent pupil successes range from gaining entry to Oxford and Cambridge Universities and various medical schools to international honours in shooting, fencing and canoeing.
Sport has traditionally been one of Ellesmere College’s strengths. Rugby, hockey, football and tennis are played throughout the School..
