Edington and Shapwick School is a small, independent specialist school for dyslexic boys and girls who have the potential to enjoy an academic curriculum. The School was founded by the late Colin Atkinson CBE to provide specifically for boys and girls whose education would otherwise be sabotaged by dyslexia. It is situated near to Glastonbury on the Somerset Levels.
Whole-school curriculum
Although an independent school, we are also one of the few schools to achieve the standards required by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to qualify for approval as a school for pupils with dyslexia or specific learning difficulties. As a consequence, we are inspected by OFSTED. We are also a category ‘A’ CReSTeD school offering a wholeschool curriculum. OFSTED and CReSTeD reports are both available on our website.
CReSTeD praise
The 2005 CReSTeD report praises the School for its 20 years of success in the field of dyslexia, for its well-organised and appropriate curriculum, for its good facilities and staff training programmes, well-motivated pupils, well-qualified and experienced staff and GCSE results that were particularly good.
School ethos
Our ethos is to make maximum demands on strengths while supporting and developing weaknesses. Our academic results are impressive and we feature in the top 5% of schools nationally because of our very high value-added score. Of equal, if not greater, importance is the growth and development of self-esteem in our pupils. We offer a fairly traditional curriculum taught by trained specialists to small groups of pupils where the mean class size is eight.
Language therapy and occupational therapy
Another speciality of the School is our ability to deal with dyspraxia. We have a staff of three speech and language therapists and two occupational therapists. We are the only school in the country to be formally accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Sporting and extracurricular activities
We offer a wide range of sports, fixtures, activities and visits both home and abroad.
