Clifton College is one of England’s most famous boarding schools. Founded in 1862, it has always enjoyed the reputation of being at the forefront of education in the UK. The School offers continuity of boarding and day education for boys and girls from age 3 to 18. The Preparatory School and the Upper School occupy adjacent sites and share facilities such as the chapel, theatre and sports grounds, and transfer between the two schools takes place at age 13. The structure, ethos and timetable are very much those of a boarding school, and the vast range of activities and opportunities reflects this. Pupils from overseas are welcome – they currently make up about 20% of the School’s population, and come from over 30 countries worldwide.
Location
The School is situated in what the poet Sir John Betjeman described as ‘the handsomest suburb in Europe’, on the northwest fringe of Bristol, adjacent to the Downs and Bristol Zoo. The School has good access to Heathrow, Gatwick and Bristol airports, the two Bristol mainline railway stations, the National Express coach station, and the M4 and M5 motorways.
Academic excellence
Academic standards are high and the excellent teaching has been commented on by recent school inspections. The academic curriculum is broad-based and a large number of subjects are available in the foundation years, at GCSE, AS- and A-levels. Up to the age of 11 there is strong emphasis on traditional literacy and numeracy skills. Each pupil has an academic Tutor who monitors effort and achievement at regular intervals. Reports are sent home each term and parents have the opportunity to meet teachers each year. The School is equally strong in literature, languages (including Mandarin), the arts and science. The rapid and impressive development of ICT facilities has benefited all subject areas. Most leavers go on to higher education at the university of their choice, and each year more than 10% of them win places at Oxford or Cambridge, particularly to read law, engineering, and medicine.
Pupil care
The House system is the cornerstone of pastoral care at Clifton, and each House has Houseparents, assistants and a matron, all of whom are residential. All Houses have telephone and fax facilities and each pupil has a personal e-mail address and broadband internet access. Special arrangements are made for parents who cannot attend the formal conferences to meet with teachers. Pupils are encouraged by their Tutors to take full advantage of the many sports and co-curricular activities on offer during the working day, in the evenings and particularly at weekends. Clifton has a clear and enforceable code of behaviour that aims to protect each and every member of the community.
Entry requirements and scholarships
Scholarships are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+ for boys and girls with outstanding academic, musical, artistic, sporting or all-round potential, and some bursaries may be available to supplement smaller awards, depending on financial circumstances. Otherwise, entry is based on school reports, interviews and tests in English and mathematics, the precise requirements varying with age. Wherever possible, Clifton likes to meet candidates and show them the School before offering a place, but we accept that this is not always possible. Video interviews may be required where there are facilities to arrange this. Pupils need to have reached a reasonable standard in English before they are admitted, the requirement being less for younger pupils and greater for older ones.
Tuition in English as a second language
Overseas students for whom English is not their first language are entitled to extra English tuition within the curriculum. The precise nature of this tuition varies according to age of entry to the School, and the number of other languages to be studied. Where tuition is part of the main curriculum there is no extra charge, but private lessons outside the curriculum are charged for – the cost depending on the size of class. We recommend that overseas pupils whose English is not fluent attend an intensive course in English, preferably in the UK, before joining the School. We are happy to recommend such courses if required.
Facilities and new developments
Clifton boasts some of the most well-equipped facilities for teaching, learning and recreation, in the country. All boarding Houses and most classrooms are linked to the College intranet, and have rapid broadband Internet access. Sports facilities are extensive, both indoors and outdoors. The School has a 400-seater, purpose-built theatre and a Junior Common Room where Sixth Formers can relax within the secure confines of the School’s gates. In the last two years a new girls’ boarding house has opened and three of the boys’ houses have been fully refurbished to modern standards. At the Sports Ground, a new indoor tennis and netball centre allows all-year coaching.
What makes Clifton special?
Most visitors comment on the open and friendly atmosphere and the clear sense of purpose. Our location on the edge of a civilised city with its theatres, museums and two fine universities allows us to make important academic and cultural links, and to be outward looking. Our pupils come from a wide variety of backgrounds and from all parts of the world. They are naturally friendly and they work and play hard. Our aim is that they leave Clifton well equipped for the modern world and with the confidence, character and qualifications to succeed.
Rated top in the UK for ‘added-value’
In a recent national Government survey, Clifton College was amongst the top schools in the UK when it came to improving each pupil’s academic performance.
