The School
A successful, small, independent, ‘family’, boarding and day school of 350 boys and girls aged 7–17, Chilton Cantelo School offers a civilised, supportive environment in which individuals are valued, while a happy, relaxed, yet hard-working atmosphere prevails.
Set in and around an imposing 18th-Century manor house and 30 acres of parkland, four and a half miles from both Sherborne and Yeovil, Chilton combines high standards of classroom teaching and of pastoral care, to provide a genuine all-round education designed to develop each pupil’s potential. Classes are small, results impressive!
The School offers both boarding and day places, with Day Scholars having the option to board on an occasional (or regular-night) basis.
The main strength of the School – in addition to its outstanding results (90%+ 5-14 A–C grades at GCSE), and an extremely broad curriculum and range of daily activities – is its success and experience at affording each pupil a great deal of individual attention and care.
Structure
The School is divided into three distinct sections – a Preparatory Department, Middle, and Upper Schools – each benefiting from its own classroom buildings and facilities, separate boarding arrangements and designated House Staff.
Pupils in Years 3–8 complete their prep. under supervision, during the School day, which ends at 17.30.
Academic curriculum and enrichment
The broad academic curriculum – typically 23 subjects are offered at GCSE – is complemented by an extensive range of afternoon ’enrichment’ activities.
Currently, these include archery, computing, dance, fencing, cricket, golf, horse riding, karate, kick-boxing, outdoor education, swimming, a variety of music and drama, woodcraft and a full range of team games. In the evening and at weekends, boarding pupils enjoy a full programme of activities and trips. Both boarders and Day Scholars may also join our outstanding Corps of Drums.
Facilities
Amongst its other facilities, the School has its own church, a new sports hall complex (and dance studio), two ICT suites, grass and hard courts, a cinema, highly-regarded departments of Learning Support and English as an Additional Language, and extensive and attractive grounds which incorporate a ropes and assault course.
Further sporting and recreational facilites are available locally.
A small Sixth Form offers – in conjunction with Yeovil College – the full complement of post-16 courses, with all tutorials being delivered at school.
