Perfect location
Cheltenham College was established in 1841 and occupies a fine site close to the historic town centre of Cheltenham Spa, in the heart of the Cotswold countryside, easily accessible by road, train and close to several airports. Victorian buildings in gardens and playing fields provide a beautiful setting which, following many developments and modernisations over recent years, provides excellent facilities.
There are seven boarding houses all offering exceptional facilities and a friendly place to live. The school is a Church of England foundation, with Chapel playing a central role in school life; however, pupils of all faiths are welcomed.
Academic excellence
The first priority at the College is that pupils should be stretched academically and intellectually: it is very important that they are well prepared for public examinations and their eventual university courses and careers. However, this is not at the expense of other accomplishments. Great importance is attached to every aspect of their educational experience – academic, sporting, cultural and spiritual. Boys and girls here should have the opportunity to develop their many and varied talents as fully as possible.
Academic standards are high, with a 100% GCSE pass rate, with 44% gaining A* and A grades, and 73% of A Level passes at A or B grades in 2005. A very high proportion of the pupils go on to university, with approximately ten Oxbridge places gained each year.
Extracurricular choice
There are fine facilities for sports and games, with high standards achieved. The main sports offered are rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, rowing and tennis; the many other sports on offer include clay pigeon shooting, polo, golf, badminton and swimming.
Music is also strong and plays a large part in the lives of many pupils. There is a large orchestra, a chamber orchestra, a wind band, three jazz bands and a Chapel choir. Regular drama productions, on average nine a year, are further evidence of the plentiful range of cultural activities at the College. Various clubs and societies thrive, providing a stimulating educational environment.
