Location
Caterham School was founded in 1811 and moved to its current site in 1884. It is situated in a beautiful 80-acre wooded valley, about 20 miles south of London, with easy access from the M25 (Junction 6). There are excellent rail and bus links to London. Both Gatwick and Heathrow airports are easily accessible (approximately 25/45 minutes respectively).
Pastoral care
Caterham School aims to provide an education for life in an environment that is supportive and friendly. Our aim is to develop the self-esteem and confidence of all our pupils. As they mature, pupils at Caterham take increasing responsibility for their own personal and academic development, but they always remain at the apex of a ‘caring triangle’ which involves staff and parents.
Academic
The School offers a full range of academic subjects at GCSE, AS and A-level. In 2004 the A-level A–B pass rate increased to 81.74%. Many scholarships are on offer each year for both academic excellence as well as art, music and all-round ability. Almost 100% of the students go on to university and there is a long history of pupils attending Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and Durham, as well as Harvard and Yale.
Extracurricular activities
The facilities of a modern leisure centre with 25-metre indoor swimming pool, fitness suite, dance studio and sports hall enable us to offer an extensive and varied programme of sports, and many of our pupils play at county and national level. Pupils can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh‘s Award Scheme, Combined Cadet Force or choose from the wide range of other activities available.
Facilities
Over the past few years there has been a multimillion-pound refurbishment of the girls and boys boarding facilities to include many en suite bedrooms. The theatre/assembly hall has been completely rebuilt to provide an excellent venue for the performing arts. A wide variety of musical and dramatic performances take place each year for pupils of all ages and abilities. A new digital language laboratory was opened in 2001 and the School has excellent sports and IT facilities. Also, we have started building a state of the art science block and refectory, due to open in September 2006.
Boarding
The boarding community is at the heart of Caterham, which welcomes boys and girls from all over Britain and overseas. This international dimension is seen as a real advantage in an increasingly cosmopolitan world and is in line with our mission to provide an education for life. Many of our boarders have parents who live or work overseas, and an increasing number of local pupils choose to board.
The top priority of Caterham School is to provide an education for life in a caring, Christian environment.
