Preparatory Senior
Only two minutes’ walk from the sea, Brighton College is an outstanding centre of academic, cultural and sporting excellence in the heart of Brighton, one of England’s most famous and popular seaside towns. At Brighton College, every child is encouraged to fulfil his or her academic potential and to develop his or her own particular interests, whether in music, art, sport, drama, dance or other areas, within a supportive, structured and family environment.
A flexible approach
Brighton College has over 25 years of experience of co-education and offers either full or weekly boarding (as well as day places). Flexibility is key: weekly boarders may leave on Friday and return on Monday. We are a five-day week school but maintain a full and varied programme for boarders, including a full sporting programme on Saturday. The boarding community echoes the whole school ethos of a warm, caring, family atmosphere. Pastoral care is excellent: the boarding houses are run by a Housemaster and Housemistress, both with a young family of their own, and supported by a team of tutors.
Academic excellence
Brighton College is consistently one the best-performing co-educational schools in Sussex. In 2004, over 82% of A-level grades were A or B and at GCSE over 55% of subject passes were at A* or A grades. Academic highs are at the heart of the college’s ambitions, but not at the expense of becoming a ‘hot-house’. The policy remains simply to bring out the very best in every pupil.
State-of-the-art facilities
To complement the academic success, pupils enjoy regional and national recognition in areas such as sport and music. Rugby, cricket, hockey, squash and football are major boys’ sports, while for the girls netball, hockey and cricket feature strongly. A large number of other sports are also available for boys and girls.
Drama is also an important part of college life, with regular productions taking place throughout the year for all age groups. An extensive millennium development programme is taking place throughout the School, designed to ensure we provide state-of theatre facilities for all our pupils. A new three-storey Performing Arts Centre was opened in the summer of 2000, incorporating a dance studio, further music practice classrooms and a Café de Paris. This was the first phase of an extensive development programme. Further developments have included the opening of a new music and drama school with recording studio, dedicated performance space and ICT suite, a major refurbishment and extension to the Gilbert Scott Library, the creation of The Rose Cinema and Lecture Theatre and, in summer 2004, a major refurbishment and upgrading of the boarding houses.
Our aim is excellence
