Box Hill School
Box Hill stands in 40 acres of grounds in Mickleham village in wooded countryside only 30 minutes from Gatwick and Heathrow Airports. The School was founded in 1959 and has approximately 360 girls and boys. We have spent a lot of money recently on refurbishing many areas of the school and we will open a new boys boarding house in September 2005. We have an extensive computer network and all Year 7 students are given a school laptop. We are a proud member of Round Square, committed to ensuring all students achieve their potential in a happy school.
Academic work
The School prepares pupils for entry to universities in Britain and elsewhere, offering a broad curriculum. Experienced staff are always available to give advice.
A large number of subjects are taught: 21 at GCSE and 19 at A-level. It is possible to arrange lessons in additional foreign languages as an extra. Class sizes are small: in the sixth form, they are between 6 and 12, and lower down they are generally between 18 and 20. Each pupil has a tutor who directs their academic studies and with whom they meet every week. For overseas pupils there is an English as an Additional Language (EAL) department with specialist teaching to help them improve their vocabulary and overcome difficulties in their mainstream subjects. Overseas pupils can be entered for a variety of EAL examinations that qualify them for entry to British and overseas universities. Competitive scholarships are offered each year, for entry into Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12.
Pastoral care
Boarding houses are small, well furnished and comfortable. There are no large dormitories. The youngest children may be in rooms of four, but the vast majority of rooms have three or two pupils. House Captains have their own rooms. Each house has a resident Housemaster or Housemistress and an Assistant, and there is a medical centre with qualified nursing staff for medical problems. When entering the School each new pupil is given an established pupil to look after them for the first few days to make them feel welcome and settled.
Sports and activities
There is an extensive range of activities available throughout the week including football, hockey, cricket, netball, volleyball, basketball, tennis and riding. We have a climbing wall and a large number of pupils take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, many of whom achieve Gold. The Performing Arts are very strong here.
Box Hill’s International Study Centre (ISC) is fully integrated with the main school. Boys and girls from overseas will enjoy the same full range of activities, tutorial support and monitoring, and pastoral care as other pupils. They will be able to take a full part in the life of an English boarding school.
Box Hill offers small classes, regular academic
monitoring, extensive IT facilities, excellent pastoral
care and internationalism
